These games help to develop observation and classification skills. They are best used to reinforce work learning to identify or study specific themes such as leaf patterns, different forest types, edible native plants, seeds or even the rock types of an area.

Journaling

 We have used journaling for all sorts of applications over the years in our programs. Primarily we use them to record important findings while participants engaged in activities such as “Build A Marine Ecosystem” or “Micro Trails or Parks”. We also incorporate journaling times into our schedule for students to have some regular quiet, reflective time.

Beach Life Bingo

This fun activity harnesses and focuses student energy on the beach into a learning experience. Students use full-colour bingo cards to find and identify local beach creatures. All photos were taken in the intertidal zone of Mayne Island, BC by Stephanie Hurst.

Bug Wall

This activity encourages participants to explore the world of bugs in their area. Using bug boxes and magnifying glasses, as well as some reference books on hand, participants are told that they are going to be entomologists together and build a bug wall of information to share all they have found.

Introduction to Intertidal Exploration

This lesson gives students a hands-on introduction to intertidal ecology.  Following an introductory classroom lesson, students go to the beach at low tide to explore the intertidal zone.

At a very young age, children can learn the key characteristics required to identify trees. By engaging their many senses such as sight, touch, and smell and keeping the focus simple, children are able to differentiate between tree species.
