I’m pleased to invite you to a special celebration of All Buffleheads Day on October 14th ( Leap Year). Special because it will mark :
A) the twentieth anniversary of monitoring the return of the ‘Spirit Duck’ to the Salish Sea,
B) the fiftieth anniversary of my first meeting with the Bufflehead, the ‘Dewar Duck’,
C) the final solution (proximate cause) of the mystery behind the Great Bufflehead Crash.
I’ve had an exciting field season, having just completed my sixth trip into the interior grasslands of BC to observe the success and fate of Bufflehead nests and broods. This is my seventeenth year following them back and forth between their summer and winter grounds, and they continue to surprise me. I’m especially excited to announce that we will celebrate the return of the Bufflehead with the legendary singer and eclectic musician Ed Peekeekoot from Saskatchewan. Many years ago I met Ed in concert in my home town beneath the apex of Palliser’s Triangle, and the sacred Cree place of Wichequatinou and Manitou. Ed joined me on my recent trip into the interior where he observed and photographed the surviving members of the “Niners” brood. Ed played a solo serenade beneath the Wabimitos ( White Tree) where the Tse-tsega-tsi-gis (Flicker) excavated warm homes for future generations of Wapanosipsak, the brilliant Little White Duck. Ed is an amazing singer, song-writer, and story-teller. Come join us for fun and celebration. The vigil is on.
